Vegetable Farm Shares (CSA)

Sorry! We are sold out of traditional summer CSA farm shares for 2016.

You can still sign up for a Farmers' Market Share. Click here for more information.

About the CSA

We offer certified organic vegetables and grains as a CSA in the Great Falls area as part of a 16-week summer farm share or Community Supported Agriculture CSA program. Our CSA is available in Great Falls, Helena and Choteau.

The CSA is a unique way to get local, seasonal, healthy, organic vegetables and grains to your table every week.

In a CSA, you become a "shareholder" in the farm, buying in during the Winter and then reaping the rewards throughout the summer as you pick up your package, or "share" of fresh veggies and heritage and ancient grains.

A typical July share.
Here's a quick look at what you can expect when you sign up for the Prairie Heritage Farm vegetable Community Supported Agriculture program:

  • A package of freshly harvested vegetables and grains;
  • Eating healthy and in season;
  • Knowing where your food comes from;
  • Supporting local farmers;
  • Being part of reviving a sustainable, local food system.

Price and Payment
A full share is $480 in two payments of $240 each, one in the spring and one in August. Or, you can pay in monthly installments starting with a $96 deposit and four additional monthly payments of $96 starting in June.

A half share is $290, all of which is due up front.

Our primary means of communication with you, in particular with our weekly newsletter, will be by way of email and our website, so please share with us your email address either on your check or when you sign up online.

Pick Ups/Communities
We offer pick ups in Choteau, Great Falls, Helena (half shares only) and on-farm near Power. If you're interested in coordinating a pick up in your community, please get a hold of us.

More About Community Supported Agriculture
Community Supported Agriculture, commonly referred to as CSA, is a unique arrangement between a farmer and customers. Customers buy shares in the farm’s crops, usually at the beginning of the season and in exchange, they receive goods throughout the growing season. By receiving money before the season begins, the farmer has much needed operating capital to buy seeds and other start-up inputs. In this arrangement, the customer shares in the benefits as well as in the risks of the farm. That means if we get a late frost that kills our tomatoes, you may not get tomatoes in your share. But, if we have a great tomato year, everyone is making salsa. A CSA allows you to become more closely connected to where your food comes from, and by supporting a local farm, you are also supporting the local economy and supporting a local family and their work on the land.

More On What to Expect With Your Vegetable CSA
A typical June share
Each week, you'll pick up a package of organic vegetables and grains – whatever is ripe and ready for harvest that week. The CSA will run from June through September and you'll receive shares for 16 weeks. Your first CSA share is likely to include early-season crops like spinach, radishes, peas, kale and like. By July, your fridge and pantry will be brimming with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, greens, beets, summer squash, cucumbers and fresh herbs. Part of the beauty of the CSA is you will truly be eating in season.

Here's what was is on our seed list, just to give you an idea:

Lettuce, radishes, arugula, spring mix, sugar snap peas, beets, carrots, potatoes, turnips, fresh beans, tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, fennel, kale, chard, bok choy, winter squash, pumpkins, garlic, broccoli, cabbage, parsley, basil and cilantro.

About Prairie Heritage Farm
Prairie Heritage Farm is owned, managed and wrestled with by Jacob and Courtney Cowgill -- two Montanans who came back to Central Montana three years ago to be a part of reviving local agriculture in the landscape in which they grew up. We believe that small family farms nourish not only the people who work them, but the people they feed and communities in which they live. We believe organic agriculture, diversification and a robust local food system are good for the health of our farm, our customers, ourselves and our planet.

We are so thankful for your support and we look forward to serving you healthy, organic food.

Warmly,
Jacob and Courtney Cowgill
